Reimagining a ginger
processing facility

This project challenges the hidden nature of global food logistics by transforming a generic, active ginger-processing warehouse in Poeldijk into an immersive civic experience. While the Netherlands acts as a global hegemon in the ginger trade, processing nearly forty percent of European flows, the architecture facilitating this massive industry remains completely disconnected from the product’s modern wellness image and the public eye. To bridge this gap, the design proposes a radical adaptive reuse of a processing facility in Poeldijk, interrogating the spatial potential of “exteriorless” industrial architecture and asking whether or not it can be translated into a meaningful public space. Through the insertion of elevated walkways, the intervention intersects the hidden realities of warehouse labor and waste management with public life. By introducing new extruded volumes, educational workshops, multi-sensory programs, a cafe, outdoor public spaces, and a rooftop garden, the project successfully reclaims a banal logistics node as a highly dynamic and engaging public landscape for the surrounding local community.
